How To Take Your Own Body Measurements Like A Pro

It is really important to have your most recent body measurements on hand when looking for the perfect fit online. The Lakeside Collection is always trying to improve the customer experience, recently adding even more specific sizing details for select women’s apparel. It definitely helps to have a few of those important measurements at the ready so you can use them as a reference during your online shopping experience. Learn a few tips on how to take your own body measurements just like a professional tailor in this how-to guide.

How To Take Your Own Body Measurements Like A Pro

What Measuring Tools Do I Need?

It’s no secret that the most important tool tailors use to take basic clothing measurements is the flexible measuring tape. This special type of measuring tape is made of cloth, which gives you the flexibility to measure the natural curves of your body. If you don’t have the flexible type of measuring tape, you might be interested to know that it’s a tool that can be used for craft projects and everyday household measurements. In addition to the flexible measuring tape, another household tool that will be useful is a full-length bathroom mirror.

Body Measurement Tips & Tricks

Most body measurements are best done after removing clothes to get the most accurate number. However, you also have to take into account the undergarments that you will be wearing. For example, if you’re shopping for a specific top and are planning on wearing a specific type of bra under that top, you should take your body measurements with a bra.

In addition, it’s important to know how to use the cloth measuring tape. When taking your own measurements, you’ll soon find that you’ll get more accurate readings if you pull the measuring tape so that it overlaps by a few inches rather than trying to measure with the tip of the tape measure. Allow yourself some slack and subtract the overlapping inches.

Body Measurements – How to Measure Waist And Hips

Waist measurements and hip measurements are commonly confused, but as their name indicates, they measure different parts of the body. The waist is usually described as the area between the top of the hips and the bottom of the rib cage. The easiest indicator for this area is the bellybutton. Hips are measured at the widest part of the hips. Having the hip measurement is very helpful for clothing like pants, while knowing measurements for the waist is useful when shopping for women’s apparel like spring dresses and skirts.

How To Take Your Own Body Measurements Like A Pro

Body Measurements – How to Measure Bust

To measure the bust, pull the tape measure under your arms and around the back. Don’t pull too tight–just apply enough pressure to keep the tape measure in place. Make sure it is completely straight in the back. Make sure that it isn’t tangled either. This will distort the overall measurement. Then measure in front at the fullest point of the bust. Also, it’s better to measure with a mirror so you can check the back to ensure you’re measuring properly.

Lakeside’s Apparel Measurements – Common Terms

While exploring The Lakeside Collections selection of women’s apparel online, you’ll have access to detailed size charts that will make it easy to find the perfect size. Once you get your body measurements recorded, you’ll have a quick reference to compare against our products to help you choose the best size. Below are a few of the common terms you will find in our size charts. In addition to body measurements like bust, waist and hips, certain apparel items will also include clothing measurements like sweep, length and inseam that will help you get a sense of how the garment is tailored and how it will drape on your body.

Bust is measured at the fullest point of the bust.

Waist refers to the natural waist, which is the narrowest part of the torso, located between the bottom of the rib cage and the navel.

Hip is measured around the fullest part of the hip area.

Sweep refers to the circumference of the bottom hem of the garment. Measure by laying the garment flat and measuring the hem from end to end. Then, double the measurement to get the circumference.

Length is measured from the highest point of the shoulder to the hem of the garment.

Rise is the distance from the middle of the crotch seam to the top of the waistband.

Inseam is the length from the crotch seam to the hem.

After you get your measurements recorded, it’s time to start shopping the new selection of women’s apparel available right now for spring and summer. Find a new maxi dress for the summer months, search our selection of affordable fashion accessories and much more!

5 Famous Irish Writers to Read this St. Patrick’s Day

Ireland is home to some of the greatest writers in history. From novelists to playwrights, there’s an argument for Ireland having one of the greatest literary traditions in the world. Celebrate Irish history before the St. Patrick’s Day festivities begin by learning a couple facts about five of the most iconic Irish writers and their timeless literary achievements.

5 Famous Writers to Read on St. Patrick's Day

Dublin, Ireland – Where James Joyce, Oscar Wilde, G.B. Shaw and Bram Stoker were born.

Bram Stoker

Bram Stoker is most famously known for his masterpiece, Draculabut few people know that he was born and raised in Dublin, Ireland in 1847. Stoker attended the famous Trinity College in Dublin with a degree in Mathematics, and spent the majority of his working life as a civil servant, small-time theatre reviewer and theatre manager. In his spare time, he wrote and published several horror tales, first as short stories and then as novels. It took him decades to finally write what is known today as one of the most iconic horror novels, which was finally published in 1897. Unlike many great writers who are only appreciated after their death, Stoker found instant success with Dracula. He died in London in 1912.

Statue of James Joyce on Earl Street — Dublin, Ireland

James Joyce

An obvious contender for the title of “Best Writer of the Twentieth Century”, James Joyce was born in Dublin, Ireland in 1882. Coming from humble origins, Joyce managed to work his way into University College Dublin, where he focused on studying modern languages. Publishing his first short story at the age of 22, Joyce left Ireland to travel and experience the world, earning his way by teaching English in foreign countries, which wasn’t difficult given the fact that he would learn over 17 languages in his lifetime. All this time, he wrote, and in 1914 he published his first collection of short stories, Dubliners, following the well-received book with a novel, Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. It wasn’t until 1922 that he published his masterpiece, Ulysses, which completely redefined the modern novel.

George Bernard Shaw

Initially aspiring to be a novelist, George Bernard Shaw eventually found his calling as a playwright. Born in Dublin, Ireland in 1856, Shaw suffered through several failed attempts at writing novels before he fell in love with the theatre. Starting, like Stoker, as a critic, he began writing his own plays and found major success. Man and Superman (1903), Major Barbara (1907) and Pygmalion (1913) are just a few of his most famous works. In 1925, Shaw was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, one of four Irish writers to ever receive the award and the second after W.B. Yeats (1923). Years later, Shaw would also receive the Academy Award for best screenplay, adapting his play, Pygmalion, for the 1938 film.

Oscar Wilde

Born in Dublin in 1854, Oscar Wilde was essentially destined for success. The proud son of a knighted father and a linguist mother, Wilde excelled in his studies, eventually earning a prestigious scholarship to Trinity College in 1871. He received some of the college’s top honors during his studies, earning himself yet another distinguished scholarship, this time to the University of Oxford, where he would go on to collect even more awards. Drawn to poetry, Wilde started publishing poetry collections while delivering lectures on topics such as classics, literature, and most notably, aesthetics. During this highly productive time, he also wrote some of his most famous literary works, including The Picture of Dorian Gray (1891), his best novel, and The Importance of Being Earnest (1895), his most iconic play.

C.S. Lewis

Those who aren’t familiar with the name C.S. Lewis have likely heard of his most famous fantasy epic, The Chronicles of Narnia. Born in Belfast, Ireland in 1898 (as Clive Staples Lewis), he fought and was wounded in WWI, and eventually went on to receive a degree from Oxford University. He spent most of his life teaching at the university level, became an esteemed writer and lecturer of Christianity, conversed on a regular basis with J.R.R. Tolkien, and finally wrote the series that would drive his legacy, beginning with The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe in 1950. As great a theologian as he was a fantasy writer, Lewis finished his career teaching at Cambridge University until his early death in 1963.

Vacation Ideas: 5 Amazing National Parks to Visit This Spring

When most of us think about vacation, we dream about overseas destinations, envision exotic adventures or picture ourselves relaxing on a sun-drenched Caribbean beach. It’s so easy to forget that we have access to some of the most amazing destinations in the world right here in America. They’re all just a road trip away!  We’ve all heard of Yosemite, Yellowstone and the Grand Canyon. They’re incredible destinations that most of us have on our travel to-do lists if we haven’t seen them already. But they aren’t the only National Parks in America worth visiting. Searching for a spring destination? Check out these 5 lesser-known National Parks.

The Narrow Trails in Zion National Park - National Parks to Visit in Spring

Zion National Park (Utah)

National Parks are some of the best places in the country to go camping. With three different campgrounds, Zion National Park has plenty of space to pull up your camper or set up your tent in the heart of nature. The 229 square miles offer countless trails that guide you into beautiful canyons and atop the highest plateaus.

Must See: Zion National Park is a hiker’s paradise. It’s most popular hiking trail is called The Narrows. This trail (pictured above) winds you through a gorge with walls over a thousand feet tall, and can even take you into the shallow Virgin River, which is no more than a stream in some parts and safe for supervised children.

Sequoia National Park - National Parks to Visit in Spring

Sequoia National Park (California)

Yellowstone may have been the first National Park in America, but as the second National Park in America, the Sequoia National Park in California was the first created specifically to protect living things. Today there are thousands of great Sequoia trees thriving in the park, many of them hundreds or thousands of years old.

Must See: The prize of the Sequoia National Park is the General Sherman Tree. It’s the largest living single stem tree on the entire planet. The massive tree is 275 feet tall and over 36 feet in diameter. A close second to General Sherman is the General Grant Tree, a sequoia located in nearby Kings Canyon National Park.

The Newfound Gap in the Smoky Mountains National Park - National Parks to Visit in Spring

Great Smoky Mountains National Park (Tennessee & North Carolina)

Great Smoky Mountains National Park is home to the highest diversity of animals and plants in America. It boasts thousands of unique plant species and well over a hundred different species of trees. Astonishingly, most of this land remains untouched by humans. It also has some of the most beautiful views in the country.

Must See: One of the easiest ways to experience Great Smoky Mountains National Park is in your vehicle. The Newfound Gap Road allows you to drive through over 30 miles of forest. Because the road’s elevation is so high, passengers get great views of the park, with plenty of scenic overlooks to stop and take it all in.

Carlsbad Cavern National Park in New Mexico - National Parks to Visit in Spring

Carlsbad Caverns National Park (New Mexico)

Most of this National Park might be desert and grassland, but Carlsbad Cavern is known for its caves. With nearly 120 unique caves in the park, there’s enough territory to keep any cave fanatic busy and continually surprised. More so, these caves, like the main attraction at Carlsbad Caverns, are immaculately preserved.

Must See: The biggest attraction at Carlsbad Caverns is known as “The Big Room“. It’s the fifth largest cave chamber in North America, and one of the largest of these chambers in the world. This limestone chamber features excellent views of overhanging stalactite formations (pictured above) and huge, ancient columns.

Great Sand Dunes National Park in Colorado - National Parks to Visit in Spring

Great Sand Dunes National Park (Colorado)

Great Sand Dunes National Park proves that Colorado isn’t just known for its snowy slopes. Over 30 square miles of mountainous sand rests within view of numerous Colorado peaks. A popular hiking destination, the dunes feature the refreshing Medano Creek, where you can splash around and enjoy the occasional wave.

Must See: Some of the dunes are over 700 feet tall. Hiking to the top is adventure in itself, but it’s even better if you can reward yourself by taking the easy way down. The dunes are known for sand-sledding and sand-boarding. You can even rent sleds and boards from the park that are specifically designed to surf the dunes.

Oscar Countdown: A Brief History of the Red Carpet

The “Red Carpet” has become a staple of pop culture. It makes an appearance at just about every special event, most notably The Academy Awards. At the Oscars, the Red Carpet has become an event unto itself, following some of the most famous celebrities and film nominees as they emerge from their limos and step into the Dolby Theatre. Though the history of the Red Carpet can be traced back to Ancient Greece, it took some time for the Red Carpet to become a pop culture staple. Learn more about its unique history below.

Oscar Countdown: A Brief History of the Red Carpet

A Reference in Ancient Greece

One of the most famous references to the Red Carpet is found in one of the most famous Greek tragedies. It occurs in the final act of the play Agamemnon by Aeschylus. It dramatizes the return of the Mycenaean King from the Trojan War. In the climactic scene, Agamemnon’s wife, who is plotting to murder him, greets him at his chariot having lined his path to the palace with fine robes. He is hesitant to walk on such luxury, stating:

“Strew not this [purple] that shall make each step an arrogance; such pomp beseems the gods.”

Fearful of offending the gods with such a luxurious statement, Agamemnon is eventually convinced by his wife, Clytemnestra. In his bare feet, he walks the elegant path and enters the palace, to his tragic demise.

Royalty on the “Red Carpet”

Agamemnon’s fateful Red Carpet Moment was written by Aeschylus around 458 B.C. It’s an early example of what was already or eventually became a royal trend. Stepping on the ground was for the common man of ancient and medieval times. Lavish carpets or elegant walkways were a symbol of wealth, not to mention a practical way to protect expensive fabrics and pricey outerwear such as shoes from mud and filth typically thrown out on the streets in centuries past. Most famously, Sir Walter Raleigh, the English explorer credited with paving the way for some major British colonies, is rumored to have thrown his cloak on the earth over a puddle for Queen Elizabeth I–and most paintings of this legend depicted Raleigh’s cloak as a luxurious red.

The “Red Carpet Treatment”

The Red Carpet didn’t start to take shape as we know it until the 20th century. Rail travel was a competitive industry in America before WWII. The competition, specifically between New York Central’s “20th Century Limited” steam engine and Pennsylvania Railroad’s “Broadway Limited” on the New York-to-Chicago route eventually made its way out of the luxurious amenities inside the rail cars and onto the path that welcomed passengers. A plush red carpet was spread from the engine to the observation car. It became a symbol for the many luxuries that were common on these overnight trips, which essentially ran as a bed and breakfast for wealthy passengers the night before they embarked on their scenic trip from New York City to Chicago.

The Academy Awards

Purple may be the color of royalty, but it is red, not purple, that paves the walkway to the Academy Awards. The first time the Red Carpet was actually set down to welcome celebrities to the event was in 1961. Part of the reason why the carpet color was chosen to be red was the simple idea that the striking color would help define the path into the theatre. It also might have been as an imitation or a tribute to the famous Hollywood promoter and owner of Grauman’s Chinese Theatre (which used to host the Oscars). At what’s accepted as Hollywood’s first premier in 1922, Sid Grauman paved a path for the stars of Robin Hood with a red carpet.

The Rise of Red Carpet Fashion

Today, the Red Carpet is a big event in the world of fashion. In some cases it overshadows the show itself. Ever since Barbra Streisand changed the game with her pantsuit at the 1969 Academy Awards, celebrities have been trying to steal the show with what they wear. This attention to fashion basically split the show in two, making the Red Carpet an equally important event featuring hours of live footage, interviews with the nominees and plenty of commentary. Get ready for the show with these greatest moments in Oscar history.

The Red Carpet changed Hollywood’s biggest awards show forever. Don’t forget to make your own fashion statement with affordable apparel, jewelry and accessories, available every day at The Lakeside Collection.

Healthy Work Habits: Start with Easy Desk Exercises

If you’ve ever wondered why your back is sore, your legs feel weak or your mind is stressed after a long day of work, it might have less to do with your workload and more to do with the damaging effects of a sedentary office life. Too much sitting takes its toll on the body and the mind, but with a busy schedule, it might be hard to make time for a 30-minute walk at lunch or a trip to the gym. But what if it was possible to limit the harmful effects of a sedentary lifestyle right at your desk? Turn your work life around with these easy desk exercises.

Healthy Work Habits: Start with Easy Desk Exercises

Stretching & Short Meditation

Stretching is one of the best things we can do for our muscles and our posture. It’s also widely neglected as a legitimate form of exercise or daily health. Some people feel that if they’re not getting their heart rate up or working up a sweat they’re not doing anything for their bodies. This is far from the truth, particularly if you’re trying to combat a sedentary work life. The best thing about static stretching exercises is that you don’t have to have a lot of space. These exercises are also very quiet. Another quiet activity that is often accompanied by stretching is meditation. Like stretching, meditation won’t take up an entire break and has many benefits.

Squats, Lunges & Calf Raises

Squats and lunges are two of the most important leg exercises you can do–and they’re both very easy to do at your desk. Squats require less space, and when done properly, work more muscles in your legs and your core. They’re also considered one of the best bodyweight exercises because they engage so many different muscle groups, building lean muscle and toning over time. Lunges also work many of the same areas, while other leg exercises like calf raises can help mix up your routine and allow you to add weight when needed.

Office Props for Exercising

Adding more resistance to your desk exercises can be easily accomplished with small weights, kettle bells or even that ream of paper sitting by the printer. Adding a little weight to each exercise can make it feel like you’re doing more of a workout. If you don’t have access to weights, a ream of paper or even that briefcase you use to carry all your gear are quick resistance fixes with limited resources or on short notice. But there isn’t any reason to add weight when bodyweight exercises are more than enough to get the blood flowing. Other common exercise equipment that’s great for the desk include stretching bands, bosu or fitness balls.

Change Your Daily Routine

Some offices offer more desk privacy than others, meaning many workers could be easily discouraged from trying even the simplest desk exercises. If you feel uncomfortable stretching, meditating and doing exercises like squats or lunges at your desk, don’t give up on your chance at a more active office life. Try taking a walk at lunch or on your break instead. There are many health benefits to walking at work, not to mention the fact that you’ll be able to get up from your desk and experience a well-deserved change of scenery. National Opposite Day: 5 Ways to Celebrate with Kids

Many people aren’t aware, but today (January 25th) is the official National Opposite Day in America. It’s the perfect opportunity to break free of our monotonous winter routines by trying something completely different. And for parents, it’s a unique opportunity to turn an ordinary winter day into a fun tradition the kids will love!

National Opposite Day: 5 Ways to Celebrate with Kids

1. Breakfast for Dinner

One of the easiest ways for parents to celebrate National Opposite Day with their  kids is to make some of their favorite breakfast dishes for dinner. With more time to prepare and no morning rush, you’ll be able to upgrade their morning bowl of cereal for a breakfast menu with pancakes or waffles, and scrambled eggs.

2. Summer in Winter

The middle of winter is when your kids are missing their favorite summer activities the most. Make it feel like summer in your home on National Opposite Day by having a picnic inside for dinner. You and the kids could also set up a tent in the basement, bedroom or family room to have an impromptu camping trip in the house.

3. Take Things Apart

Instead of putting something together, try taking something apart. Better than a puzzle or a traditional board game, this kind of activity will help satisfy their curiosity about how things work. Get an antique analog clock you can take apart with them, or an old radio or typewriter. Supervise and to keep track of all the little pieces.

4. Simple Switches

Another easy way to celebrate National Opposite Day is to incorporate simple switches throughout the day. Give your kid the grownup mug for their morning orange juice. They’ll get a kick out of their parents having to use kiddie cups at your breakfast-for-dinner. They’ll also have fun trying to walk around in your big shoes.

5. Bedtime Stories

Wind down National Opposite Day by giving your kids the opportunity to read their favorite bedtime story to you. It’s a good idea to move this up in the schedule so they still have a little energy to get through the story. Or, if you’re up for it, you could do a full bed swap and let your kids have the grownup bed all to themselves.

The great thing about National Opposite Day is that you don’t have to celebrate on January 25th. Turn any day on the calendar into an opposite day for you and your kids this winter. Mix things up, make some great memories and keep them entertained until summer rolls around with toys, games and more from Lakeside.

Always Be Organized

Just as important as decorating for spring is the ability to organize everyday things to keep them out of sight. It’s much more difficult to let your spring decor shine through all the clutter. Some of that clutter just needs to be straightened out once and for all, like files and documents in the home office or kitchen. Other areas are in need of storage for daily cleanup. And some out-of-sight areas like closets need a makeover of their own.

Bring the Garden Indoors

For many of us the ground is still frozen and unfit for early gardening. That shouldn’t stop you from enjoying the beauty of nature inside your home. It won’t be long until you’re able to get out and start planting, but you might be anxious to get started. More importantly, you might need a colorful vase of flowers or lively planter to get you through the dreary winter months. Bring the garden indoors with these spring planters or holders.
