The temperature outside is quickly rising and it is time to break out the sunscreen.  Finally, you, your friends and your family can spend time outside.  Do you enjoy camping, the beach or just being outdoors?  There is so much you can do in the summer.

I enjoy many summertime activities like biking, camping and one of my favorite holidays, The Fourth of July.  As far back as I can remember, The Fourth of July was a time when you had cookouts, you went to the local carnival where you spent your weekly allowance trying to win that stuffed bear while enjoying some cotton candy.  You could barely wait to view the spectacular fireworks.

This is something that I now get to enjoy with my family and friends.  Every year we go to the Great Lakes Naval Base.  We bring our cooler of snacks and drinks, spread out a blanket and a couple of lawn chairs, throw the Frisbee around and then sit back and enjoy the entertainment.  The big moment comes when they start the fireworks.  They are amazing and although I’m not a kid anymore, I still sit there with my family in awe of the beautiful colors.

The weather down by the Lakeside is changing quickly.  Trees and flowers are blossoming and it is very clear that Spring is here, and Summer is in the not too distant future.  This time of year is always exciting.  Each day shows us new changes.  These changes are not just apparent in the weather or our gardens, but also in our lives.  It seems to me, as soon as the weather starts to improve that we also prepare for change.  Warm weather and daffodils, for me, also means a lot of family events.  Graduation invitations seem to start coming in as soon as the Spring showers start.  Graduation events seem to lead directly into Father’s Day and then we go right to Summer picnics.

Memorial Day was originally known as Decoration Day because it was a time to honor the nation’s Civil War dead by decorating their graves.  On May 5, 1868, General John A. Logan of the Grand Army of the Republic declared in General Order No. 11 that:

The 30th of May, 1868, is designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers, or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village, and hamlet churchyard in the land.  In this observance no form of ceremony is prescribed, but posts and comrades will in their own way arrange such fitting services and testimonials of respect as circumstances may permit.

In 1971, Congress declared Memorial Day a national holiday to be celebrated the last Monday in May.  Let’s remember, observe and honor all those who have died in all of America’s wars on this Memorial Day.

Yes my favorite holiday is St. Patrick’s Day, okay I am Irish but how could you not just love this event.  I remember back to when I was a little girl, marching in the parade, watching Irish step dancing, listening to the bagpipes and my mother singing.  It was and is a day of family, fun, tradition and culture for all ages and backgrounds.

Some Irish traditions only occur in our fine city of Chicago where they turn the river a perfect shade of green.  Other cities have tried to copy this but have not been successful.  This awesome traditon starts off with an orange dye and if viewing it you see the river turn orange.  Then after a glorious moment or two you then see the true magical green color appear.  That is where we believe the leprechaun comes in.  Since St. Patrick’s Day falls on a Tuesday this year, I will be sure to be in all green attire that day at work.  What will you do that day or what tradition would you like to start?
