Turn Back Time: Tips for Getting Used to the Time Change

plush-micro-velvet-bed-blanketsDaylight Saving Time ends in just a few days. We only turn the clocks back one hour, but that one hour shifts our entire reality. But it doesn’t have to be a shock to the system. Here are 4 tips for getting used to the time change.

Bed Time Soon it will be getting dark much earlier and you may want to go to bed earlier than necessary, but that could disrupt your sleep during the night. A few days before the time change, start adjusting your sleep schedule. Change it just 15 minutes each night — the first night, go to bed 15 minutes later than normal; the second night, go to bed 30 minutes after your regular bedtime and continue until it’s a full hour. This helps you wake up at your regular waking hour and you won’t get too much or too little sleep.

light-bulbUse Light to Your Advantage Any kind of light — whether it’s sunshine or an email alert on your phone, it disrupts your melatonin production. Melatonin is the hormone that regulates sleep; our bodies can only produce it when there’s no light. That means you can use bright lights to help you stay awake a little longer in the evening so you can get a good night’s sleep and wake up at your regular time without feeling groggy.

Electronics When you have that one hour messing with your sleep schedule, any little thing can derail your plans — including electronics. Though we like to be connected day and night through texts, emails and social media, the buzzing and the lights can work against our efforts to sleep. All the stimulation keeps our brains working, making it difficult to calm down enough to rest. Try shutting off all your gadgets and leaving them in another room and you can reduce your risk of losing sleep to the time change.

college-fight-song-alarm-clockExercise for Sleep Some experts suggest exercising in the evening is bad for your sleep. Exercise is, after all, good for a burst of energy which can make it hard to sleep at night. However, it may be better to get your workout in at night than foregoing exercise all together. According to a poll conducted by the National Sleep Foundation, adults who exercise — regardless of time of day — get better sleep than those who don’t exercise. So if you’re concerned about sleep, consider adding exercise to your daily routine.

Adjusting to the time change varies from person to person, but, generally, it only takes about a day to get used to the shift in light. At The Lakeside Collection we have products to make the time change easy on you — from sheets to alarm clocks, we have you covered.

Festivals of the Dead: Celebrations of the Dearly Departed Around the World

animated-demonWe are barreling toward Halloween, the scariest, creepiest holiday of the year. The holiday is celebrated mostly in the United States and the United Kingdom, but other countries and cultures honor the dead with unique traditions as well. Here are some of the most interesting celebrations of the dearly departed around the world.

Dia de Los Muertos Probably the closest to the day of Halloween and geographically closest to the United States is Mexico’s Dia de Los Muertos (Day of the Dead), which starts on November 1 and ends on November 2. It’s rooted in Aztec tradition going back thousands of years and has evolved alongside Mexican culture. The skull is the biggest symbol — it’s used to honor the dead. People make elaborate sugar skulls with the names of dead relatives and wear skull masks and dance to celebrate their dearly departed relatives.  Families often go on picnics at gravesites of loved ones and bring gifts to leave at their headstones. Other families create altars dedicated to departed loved ones where they place pictures and candles to honor them on Dia de los Muertos.

skull-candleYu Lan Pen In China, they celebrate Yu Lan (The Hungry Ghost Festival). It’s held on the 15th day of the 7th month of the lunar calendar — August, which is considered “Ghost Month.” Like the Aztecs, it’s about honoring those you love who have passed. During the Hungry Ghost Festival, people make special offerings of food or incense to the spirits. Some families have feasts and set a place for spirits at the table. Others release lighted boats on lakes, ponds or rivers to give spirits a guiding light for their earthly travels.

Gai Jatra In Nepal, they celebrate Gai Jatra (Festival of Cows) in August, which honors the dead as well as pays respect to the feared god of death, Yamaraj. Because the Nepalese people consider cows one of the most sacred creatures (holy cows), families who have lost loved ones in the last year, lead a cow in a big procession with the belief the cows would lead the spirits to heaven.

creepy-handsPchum Ben In Cambodia, they honor the dead on Pchum Ben (Ancestors’ Day) which falls at the end of Vassa (the sort of Buddhist Lent) — usually at the end of September/beginning of October. It is believed the tortured souls of dead loved ones return to the pagoda for relief from the brutal afterlife. That’s where Cambodians leave food as offerings — they believe the spirits will curse them if they don’t make an offering so most every Cambodian participates in the festival.

While other cultures’ takes on honoring the dead is fascinating, we love our own Halloween traditions and Lakeside has hundreds of products to keep it alive to honor the dead and the living at every holiday. Halloween, Christmas or the 4th of July, we have everything to make your holidays special.

Halloween: 5 Easy Pumpkin Crafts

crayon-pumpkinWith just about two weeks until Halloween, almost every house on the block is haunted! If you haven’t yet draped your yard in spider webs, sprinkled them with bats and set up the Grim Reaper to guard your door, it’s not too late! You still have time to craft a few pumpkins to align your house with the holiday. Since pumpkin is the season’s favorite fruit, we looked for a few cute (not creepy) pumpkin crafts to inspire you as Halloween nears. Here are 5 easy pumpkin crafts to try.

Pigmented Pumpkins Carving isn’t always the most practical way to decorate pumpkins. You have to use different types of knives (not ideal when you have little kids around), it’s messy and it can be a creative challenge in the worst way if you’re not an artist. But there are ways to make art with your pumpkin if you’re not an artist. Crafty Morning got around carving her pumpkin by making a Jackson Pollack-esque pumpkin using crayons and a hair dryer! It’s such a simple idea, uses few materials and takes very little time. No slimy seeds to cleanup and it’s beautiful, to boot!marble-pumpkin

Mom Dot bypassed carving by playing with fancy coloring, too. She used water and nail polish to create a marbled look on her tiny pumpkins. It’s not something you could do with big pumpkins, but they make adorable Halloween accent pieces you can put on the mantel, the buffet or end tables. If you’re not confident about your marbling skills, she also provides a video tutorial.

ping-pong-pumpkinPing Pong Pumpkins How brilliant are these little jack-o’-lanterns? They are as easy to put together as they are cute! Paging Fun Mums gets the credit for simplest, ingenious pumpkin craft, hands down. All you do is get your flameless tea lights and ping pong balls together, cut an “X” in the bottom of the ball where you insert the light, and then draw jack-o’-lantern faces on the ping pong balls with a black marker. Then just turn on the lights and they glow. You can probably use this idea for other holidays and celebrations, but it’s a pretty cute idea for Halloween.pumpkin-patch-cup

Edible Pumpkin Patch Halloween isn’t all about pumpkins and costumes — it’s also about candy! And who says you can’t be crafty with candy? Paintbrushes and Popsicles fused the pumpkin idea with candy to create these darling pumpkin patch cups. Oreos, pudding and candy — dirt never tasted so good or looked so sweet!yarn-pumpkin

Yarn Gourds This is a serious craft, but it’s seriously easy. It’s definitely for kids who like to get messy! Enchanted Homeschooling Mom made these using school glue, flour, water, balloons, yarn, and pipe cleaners to garnish her gourds. The idea is very forgiving — even if you make mistakes, they still come out cute. The only hard part is waiting for the yarn to dry. But when you’re done you have extra special, handmade Halloween art to showcase your crafting skills and celebrate the season.

Every season is a reason to celebrate at The Lakeside Collection! From fall fleece to Christmas wreaths, we have hundreds of items to make your home and holidays brighter.

5 Fall Casseroles to Try This Week

It’s about time to break out our pots and pans for warm meals on cold nights. We have so many plans to make our fall favorites, but we’re always looking for new recipes to get us through the season. We came up with a list of 5 fall casseroles to try this week.chicken-wild-rice-casserole

Go Wild If you’re looking for warm and delicious with a touch of healthy, you might want to try Chicken Wild Rice Casserole. This one comes from Pinch of Yum. Though a good amount of butter is used to make this casserole flavorful, it’s balanced out with plenty of carrots and chicken to give you nutrients. If you’re craving something green, pair it with a side of steamed broccoli splashed with lemon juice and drizzled with olive oil.

chicken-bacon-ranch-pasta-bakeOne-Dish Meal Here’s an easy, but balanced recipe for a one-dish meal. Inside Bru Crew Life came up with this one after a trip to Subway. She calls it the Chicken Bacon Ranch Pasta Bake. It has plenty of tomatoes and spinach to cover your vegetable requirements, chicken and cheese for your protein and a healthy dose of pasta to round out your meal with a grain. Just twenty minutes of prep time and twenty minutes in the oven and you can feed your whole family!twice-baked-potato-casserole

Over-Stuffed Here’s a family favorite made easy by Love Bakes Good Cakes. It’s a twice baked potato without going through the labor of scooping the potato out of its skin and putting it all back in once it’s thoroughly transformed into a tasty mash. Rather, to make it a casserole, you just cut up the potatoes, mix them with sour cream and top it all with bacon and cheese. Though it’s not a one-dish meal, it does make an excellent side for baked chicken, pork chops or steak.lemon-chicken-pasta-bake

Keep It Simple This Lemon Chicken Pasta Bake from Cooking and Beer is delightfully simple. Pasta, cooked chicken, cream of chicken soup and a sprinkling of parmesan cheese is what makes this meal magical. With a few spears of asparagus, you don’t need much else to satisfy your weeknight hunger.jalapeno-popper-casserole

Add a Little Spice If you’re looking for some excitement in your dinner routine, try adding some spice to it with Jalapeno Popper Tater Tot Casserole from Premeditated Leftovers. It mixes fun with easy to make your dinner crazy delicious! It’s like your favorite school lunch fused with your favorite party dip — you just can’t go wrong with this. This makes a good side for a simple chicken dish.

Halloween: Harmless Tricks to Play on Your Kids

halloweenHalloween means trick-or-treat — we have the treat part down, but tricks are, well, tricky. When kids are young, candy and costumes are where the fun is, but throwing in a few tricks to help them get in the spirit of the holiday adds to the festivities. Of course, we don’t want to ruin Halloween for them so we came up with a few harmless tricks to play on your kids to get into the Halloween spirit.

Trick of a Treat When trick-or-treaters come to the door, hand them a bowl full of what you found in the junk drawer. Let them choose what they want to put in their candy bags. If they decline, pull out the real bowl of candy.

Mirror Messages Thoroughly clean the bathroom mirror. Steam up the bathroom and write a message on the mirror with your finger — you can decide how creepy or scary you want it to be. When your kids get out of the shower in the morning, they’ll be able to read the message.

halloweenSpider Spaghetti This one isn’t scary at all, but it might gross out your kids. Make a pot of spaghetti for dinner — make sure to mix the sauce with noodles before serving. Before they get to the table, stir in a few tiny plastic spiders (the kind you find at the dollar store) — not so many that they see them right off, just enough for a spider surprise when they start twisting their forks.

Menacing Mouse Mice are mostly harmless, but even as cute as they are, they’re frightening to find in the house. Don’t get a real one — a fake mouse can accomplish the right kind of scare without being terrifying your kids. All you have to do is tie fishing wire to the tail — the fishing wire should be long enough that you can leave the room, close the door and pull on it to make it look like it’s moving across the floor. When the kids are watching TV, start pulling the the fishing wire until it comes into their view and wait for the reaction.

halloweenRepositioned Pumpkins There are a couple of proud moments in a child’s life and one of them is admiring the first pumpkin they’ve ever carved. After the pumpkins are set out on the porch and the kids have gone to bed for the night, switch out the carved pumpkins with different pumpkins. You have two options with this idea: 1) trade them for very poorly carved pumpkins or 2) trade them for very elaborately carved pumpkins. Either way, your kids will be thoroughly flummoxed.

Of course, at The Lakeside Collection, we don’t want to traumatize kids, we want them to enjoy Halloween! We have dozens of Halloween items — both scary and fun — to celebrate our most haunting holiday of the year.
