10 Common Household Items We Always Forget to Clean

You may have noticed while putting your Christmas decorations away or preparing for your New Year’s Eve party that your house isn’t as clean as you’d like it to be. That’s why many of us don’t wait for spring cleaning to do a thorough sweep of the house. But no matter how detailed our checklist is, we always seem to miss a few household items that gather dust, dirt and debris. If we forgot them once, chances are we will miss them again…and again. Check out this quick list to make sure you’re not missing any of those easy-to-miss spots.

10 Household Items We Always Forget to Clean

Vents & Radiators

Heating vents, air conditioning vents and radiators are magnets for dust and other debris. Aside from taking some power out of your air flow or just appearing unsightly, the dust and dirt on your heating vents can be a safety hazard, potentially causing fires. If you want to give your vents a thorough cleaning this season, make sure you unscrew the vents and wipe them clean, inside and out, and take a look inside the air duct as well.

Ceiling Fans

Not many people realize that ceiling fans can cut down on heating costs in the winter and make your home feel a little bit cozier. All you have to do is reverse the flow of your fan to clockwise. This simple switch pulls cold air up (use a low speed setting) while pushing warm air to the edge of the room so it flows down to the floor. If you’re interested in saving on heating costs, turn on your ceiling fan, but wipe down the blades first.

Door Handles & Buttons

Some household items just don’t pop up on our radar when we’re cleaning. Door knobs, handles, even the buttons on electronics like the TV, video game console or DVD player are things we touch every day. If we touch it with our hands and fingers, it needs to be cleaned, so take a quick moment and walk through every surface and appliance you turn, hold, press, and twist. Light switches are also a common culprit we forget.

10 Household Items We Always Forget to Clean

Refrigerator Drawers & Shelves

It’s easy to think of the refrigerator as that nice, cold place where bacteria can’t survive, but that’s pretty far from the truth. Because it’s not something we clean very regularly (aside from spills and ordinary upkeep), it’s always possible that some unseen germs are lurking in the drawers and on the shelves. A quick clean will also get rid of any underlying odors. Make sure you clean underneath shelves, and get the walls, too.

Refrigerator Coils

To keep our refrigerator working properly, it’s important to clean the coils at least once a year. It’s such an easy process, but few of us remember to do it. This isn’t just about brushing off or vacuuming the coils. It’s also about vacuuming or cleaning the fan. Yes, this means pulling out the fridge, unplugging it for a brief period of time and shutting off the water supply (if it’s connected for water or ice), but it’s only once a year.

Coffee Maker

It doesn’t matter if you’re a coffee connoisseur or just need that morning brew to wake up for work, chances are your coffee maker is filled with bacteria, even mold. Maintaining a clean coffee maker requires more work than scrubbing the coffee pot. Bacteria and mold build up in the machine’s reservoir and carafe more than anywhere else. Separate all the removable parts, scrub them clean and put everything back together.

10 Household Items We Always Forget to Clean

Toothbrush Holders

We use our toothbrush holders every single day, exposing them to new germs or leaving them susceptible to residue over time. A lot of nasty gunk can build up on the edges, bottom and deep inside your toothbrush holder, so once in awhile we need to give it a deep clean. All you need is some hot water and soap. Better not to take any chances on something that houses our precious toothbrush almost twenty-four hours a day.

Bath Mats & Runners

Mold is constantly trying to invade the bathroom, and that goes for common items like bath mats. We might think that if the top of the mat looks clean then we’re in good shape, but bacteria can be hiding deep inside and is particularly fond of the underside of the mat. If your mat is machine washable, it’s as easy as tossing the mat in on its own. But if your bath mat is a little more fragile, you’re going to want to hand wash and dry.

Shower Curtain Liners

Shower curtains and shower curtain liners are built to thrive in their environment, but they’re not built to last forever. Instead of throwing yours out or changing the liner after a certain period of time, you can save some money by washing it yourself. Use this washing technique to clean your shower curtain and shower curtain liners in the washing machine with some assistance from baking soda and vinegar to keep it looking fresh.

Credit Cards & Keys

It’s probably weird to think about adding items like credit or debit cards to your regular cleaning list, but they are some of the things we own that are handled by strangers the most. Whenever you hand your credit card over to pay for something, it’s picking up bacteria. This goes for anything in wallets or purses, from licenses to car keys. Try to keep purses, handbags or anything else you take out of the house on a daily basis clean.

National Have Fun at Work Day: Ideas for Having Fun at Work

Fun-At-Work-DayWe spend a lot of our time at work — 40 hours is about 23% of our entire week — if we get the recommended 8 hours of sleep per night, we’re only left with 72 hours to allocate for chores, commuting and our families. At the end of the week, we don’t have a lot of time for fun, so we have to shoehorn it into our schedules. With so much of that time being thrown at our jobs, someone thought we should set aside a day for a little whimsy at work. So, for January 28 — National Have Fun at Work Day — we put together a few ideas for having fun at work.

Joke’s On You Have everyone on your team write down their favorite jokes on post-it notes (as many as they can). Pick a blank wall in the break room or common space to post them for everyone to read in their down time or when they need a pick-me-up. If you want to make it interesting, have your co-workers guess who contributed which joke, or bring other departments in to contribute jokes and vote on your favorites.

Taste Test Get the bakers and cooks in your office to bring in their favorite dishes to be judged! The cooks get to compete for a prize (fun!) and tasters get to eat (more fun!).

Have-fun-at-work#Selfie We get a lot of face time with our co-workers — maybe more than our own families! We do projects with them, eat with them, why not create millennial art with them? Have everyone on your team take pictures of themselves (selfies), print them out and make a selfie wall. Let everyone get really creative to make self-portraits that are unique. Though it takes a little bit of thought, it’s a break in the day to have fun and make work not feel like work.

Dance Party Just about everyone has a lull in the afternoon when it’s really difficult to be productive. Instead of forcing yourself to get things done, take a break with your co-workers to get silly with a dance party! Move the chairs in the conference room and turn up a high energy songs to put everyone in a good mood — think 80s, Michael Jackson, Pharrell Williams — there are hundreds of feel good songs to make your dance party — and work — lots of fun.

Have-fun-at-work-dayDecorate Your Cube Contest When you’re spending 40 hours a week sitting in one spot, it should be a spot to remember. Challenge your co-workers to a cube decorating contest and see who can come up with the most elaborate and crazy themes to make Have Fun at Work Day and every day a little more interesting.

Surprise! If your office is low-key, keep your fun low-key by surprising a favorite co-worker with something special. It can be something nice like a candy bar from the vending machine, or, if it’s the right kind of co-worker, just get silly! Wallpaper her cube with post-it notes.

At The Lakeside Collection, we have hundreds of products to make a little fun! Whether you’re at work or at home, we have something to brighten anyone’s day.

Ditch Your New Year’s Resolution Day: Reasons It’s OK to Ditch Your Resolutions

Just two weeks into the new year and, according to Static Brain, only about 8% of the people who made resolutions will stick to them. Most don’t make it past the two week mark — which is probably why January 17 was designated Ditch Your New Year’s Resolution Day. In honor of the day, here are 4 reasons it’s OK to ditch your resolutions.winter-running

Unstructured Objectives It’s not enough to just set goals, you have to have an outline of how you are going to achieve the goals. For lofty goals you don’t have a method for completing — like running a marathon without having a training schedule — take it off your list and focus on goals that are a bit easier, with simple steps to accomplish them.

Impractical Ambition Research shows that the more narrow your goal, the more likely you are to succeed. Ideas like “lose weight” or “be more productive” might be too broad for you to accomplish. If there are items on your resolution list that don’t have outcomes that you can qualify or quantify, it’s OK to leave them alone this year and rework them for next year.

Too Much, Too Soon You may not be ready for a change. Habits like quitting smoking take more effquit-smokingort than just saying “I’m done with this.” They may require you to be emotionally and spiritually ready in order to achieve the goal. If you’re not ready, you’ll be fighting an uphill battle that requires a lot more effort and focus to get meager results, if you get results at all. If there’s anything on your list you know you’re not ready for, taking it off your list may save you a lot of stress. It’s more efficient to spend that energy on goals you’re ready to take on.

Spreading Yourself Too Thin According to researchers from Stanford University, the more resolutions you set for yourself, the less likely you are to achieve them. Our brains are not designed to multitask efficiently, so if you’re putting too many goals on your plate, you may be wasting your time trying to accomplish all of them. It’s much better to make one goal that’s minor than to get half way through ten major goals.

Multi-taskingThe Lakeside Collection has dozens of products to help you make positive changes this year — with or without resolutions! Whether you’re looking for new cookbooks to help you make your dinners more interesting or you need new linens for your bedroom, shop Lakeside for unique products at practical prices.

New Year’s Eve Parties to Remember

fireworksIt’s time to have fun and shake out the silliness of 2015 to make room for all the good things for 2016. Of course, we want to make our last night of the year to be spectacular with all things glittering and piles of confetti to make it memorable. With that in mind, we put together a list of places that put on New Year’s Eve parties to remember.

Austin They do family-friendly New Year’s Eve in Texas if you can’t make it to Disney World. Austin’s New Year (ANY) is a way to ring in 2015 with art and culture. The event is interactive, but there is plenty of music and film for breaks between  making art and walking through glow in the dark mazes. The festivities conclude with a fireworks display at 10pm. If you need to get wild, Sixth Street has enough bars with live music to keep revelers entertained until midnight.

Disney World For family-friendly festivities, Disney World puts on a great party for all ages. The park stays open until 1:00am so families can take in all the performances and live entertainment starting with a Main Street Electrical Parade at 6:30.  There’s a sparkling fireworks display at midnight and hot chocolate and cookies are served until 1:30am.

happy-new-yearLas Vegas If you need glitter and glamour without the freezing temperatures, take a quick trip to Las Vegas! On New Year’s Eve the Strip is shut down to traffic for a block party to rival Times Square. 300,00 people turn out every year to see live bands and a spectacular fireworks display you can only see in the desert. If you do make it to Vegas for New Year’s Eve, you may get a rare glimpse of snow in Sin City — there may be a few snow showers this week.

Los Angeles Los Angeles is home to celebrity A-listers which means exclusive — and expensive — New Year’s Eve celebrations. But there’s an option for people like us — New Year’s Eve at Grand Park. The event is free to the public with streets shut-down around the park so revelers can walk around to enjoy live music, art and plenty of food.

Miami Miami boasts of putting on the biggest New Year’s Eve party south of Times Square — as it should. With the temperatures hovering around 75℉, it’s hard not to enjoy January 1st. Miami is known for its nightlife, so they do no less than dazzling for New Year’s Eve. Dancing downtown starts at 8pm and they kick it up a notch with a fireworks over Biscayne Bay at midnight.

fireworksNew Orleans If you can’t make it to Mardi Gras, New Year’s Eve is the next best way to experience the Big Easy. The city puts on a rowdy party you can only find in New Orleans. In the heart of the French Quarter, instead of a ball, they drop a fleur de lis to countdown to 2015 with a 15-minute fireworks display over the Mississippi River. The party doesn’t stop at midnight — Bourbon Street bars are packed well into the new year.

Season’s greetings from all of us at The Lakeside Collection! We wish you well this season and for the year to come.
