Fall Activities to Make You Forget About Summer

Every season of the year offers something unique. Whether its the activities that depend on a certain kind of weather or the seasonal recipes that just wouldn’t taste right during a different month, there’s almost always something to look forward to no matter what season is on the horizon. It’s easy to get excited about summer, but for those of us who would rather throw on a light jacket instead of a swimsuit, who might prefer the smell of burning leaves to bonfires, or kicking back with a warm mug on a cool day rather than an ice cold glass in the hot sun, fall is the best season of the year. And these fall activities will make you forget all about summer.

Crazy for Crisp Weather
Sometimes the sweltering summer heat and humidity can be unbearable or start to get on our nerves. Fall provides a nice change of pace in most regions of the United States. While temperatures steadily decrease as winter eventually approaches, the majority of the fall months are nice and crisp. It’s the perfect weather to take a walk outdoors, particularly when the leaves start to change colors, or take a drive through nature. The season also offers many family activities and community events, especially when the harvest season gets in full swing. Apple picking at a local orchard can be a great way to spend an afternoon and gather supplies to make homemade cider or apple pie. Strolling through a pumpkin patch with the kids can result in finding the perfect pumpkins for Halloween jack-o’-lanterns and Thanksgiving pumpkin carving. And local harvest fests can offer some of our favorite summer rides with additions that only pop up in autumn, such as corn mazes.

Keeping Cozy Indoors
Just like there’s nothing better in summer than escaping inside to fans and air conditioning, there’s nothing better in autumn than warming up inside after a long day in the crisp fall air. The summer months keep us outdoors for longer periods of time, while winter forces many of us to hibernate through the coldest part of the season. Fall gives us the best of both worlds. With the leaves changing and a whisper of cold in the air, it can be very satisfying to stay indoors and cuddle up watching a movie, or kick back with a good book. It’s also, more so than any other time of year, the cooking season. The cooler climate makes it possible to use the oven again without warming up the house, and the beginning of the holiday season allows you to cook your favorite homemade meals and try out some new recipes. The harvest season is also the best time for canning, and a bountiful harvest for gardeners makes it easy to keep things fresh with home-grown flavor.

For Outdoor Enthusiasts
Nothing makes a cozy afternoon inside sweeter than a productive morning in the outdoors. Fall is arguably the best time of the year to get outside and enjoy the fresh air without having to worry about bringing things like sunscreen or coating your skin with bug spray every half hour. Hiking and mountain biking, as well as fall sports like football and soccer are perfect for the cool weather of the fall season. Athletic endeavors like jogging and cycling, recreational sports like fishing or rock climbing can be more enjoyable in autumn. Fall is also the biggest hunting season of the year, with specific start dates in appropriate areas for big game as well as waterfowl, pheasants, quail, turkeys and more. There’s a big difference between keeping warm with the right fall apparel and skimping on layers during the summer, and the temperamental weather of spring can be hard to enjoy with rainfall and humidity. Get out and enjoy the crisp fall weather before winter starts.

From awesome mugs to pour your favorite warm beverage, good books to keep you entertained and throws to keep you cozy to great wardrobe solutions for cold weather and fall home maintenance tools, Lakeside is packed with items to make the upcoming autumn season your most enjoyable and memorable season yet.

Lakeside Selection: Our Choice of Favorite Items for the Week

It’s never too early to start thinking about the holidays, and one of our favorite ones, Halloween, is coming up soon! Get everything you need to make your home and yard look gorgeously gruesome for Halloween today, and you’ll have plenty of time in October for planning parties, creating costumes, and adding cute or creepy finishing touches to your decor. If Halloween’s ghosts and ghouls aren’t your style, you’ll also find beautiful seasonal decorations to celebrate autumn. No matter how you decorate for October, you’ll find what you need.

Every Halloween display needs a focal point, and we love this skeleton decoration for its weird and whimsical charm. Just because he’s passed on doesn’t mean he forgot how to take life easy, so he’s found a comfortable spot to relax for a spell. This sleepy skeleton’s chest rises and falls as he snores in his hammock, perhaps resting up for a big Halloween night. His hammock is 8 feet long, so it’s a large enough piece to be the center of your yard’s display. Add a spotlight or two to show him off, and you’ll have one of the most unusual decorations on your block.Interactive-skeleton-hammock

Halloween is about more than spooky skeletons, though. With this cheerful Halloween bunting, you’ll get in the spirit of the season while still keeping your decor friendly enough for the littlest kids. Made of durable polyester fabric, the bunting is perfect for a porch rail, a deck or a fence. At almost 60 inches across, this adorable hanging makes an emphatic statement. Choose from jack-o’-lanterns in festive fall hues of orange and black with green accents or a trio of cheerful, bow-tied ghosts. If you have plenty of space to cover, choose both – they look great together or separately.

If your kids’ trick-or-treating days are behind them, or if you prefer a more sophisticated take on Halloween, try these oddly elegant lighted Halloween urns to flank your door or adorn your porch. Welcome guests to your Halloween party in style with these black, molded plastic urns filled with bare branches and twinkling lights. Choose from traditional Halloween black with miniature orange lights or an elegantly eerie purple with blue lights. If you prefer, you can mix and match them to create a dramatic setting for your next Halloween party. Each pair of urns is over 22 inches tall, so you can also use them as a towering tabletop arrangement or near your fireplace.

Halloween is also harvest time, which is why we’re showing off these sweet garden decorations for your yard. These painted metal pumpkins stake into the ground and give your front or back yard a festive touch that works for Halloween, Thanksgiving and beyond. Pair them with hay bales to impart a country harvest look to your yard.
