Fall Activities to Make You Forget About Summer

Every season of the year offers something unique. Whether its the activities that depend on a certain kind of weather or the seasonal recipes that just wouldn’t taste right during a different month, there’s almost always something to look forward to no matter what season is on the horizon. It’s easy to get excited about summer, but for those of us who would rather throw on a light jacket instead of a swimsuit, who might prefer the smell of burning leaves to bonfires, or kicking back with a warm mug on a cool day rather than an ice cold glass in the hot sun, fall is the best season of the year. And these fall activities will make you forget all about summer.

Crazy for Crisp Weather
Sometimes the sweltering summer heat and humidity can be unbearable or start to get on our nerves. Fall provides a nice change of pace in most regions of the United States. While temperatures steadily decrease as winter eventually approaches, the majority of the fall months are nice and crisp. It’s the perfect weather to take a walk outdoors, particularly when the leaves start to change colors, or take a drive through nature. The season also offers many family activities and community events, especially when the harvest season gets in full swing. Apple picking at a local orchard can be a great way to spend an afternoon and gather supplies to make homemade cider or apple pie. Strolling through a pumpkin patch with the kids can result in finding the perfect pumpkins for Halloween jack-o’-lanterns and Thanksgiving pumpkin carving. And local harvest fests can offer some of our favorite summer rides with additions that only pop up in autumn, such as corn mazes.

Keeping Cozy Indoors
Just like there’s nothing better in summer than escaping inside to fans and air conditioning, there’s nothing better in autumn than warming up inside after a long day in the crisp fall air. The summer months keep us outdoors for longer periods of time, while winter forces many of us to hibernate through the coldest part of the season. Fall gives us the best of both worlds. With the leaves changing and a whisper of cold in the air, it can be very satisfying to stay indoors and cuddle up watching a movie, or kick back with a good book. It’s also, more so than any other time of year, the cooking season. The cooler climate makes it possible to use the oven again without warming up the house, and the beginning of the holiday season allows you to cook your favorite homemade meals and try out some new recipes. The harvest season is also the best time for canning, and a bountiful harvest for gardeners makes it easy to keep things fresh with home-grown flavor.

For Outdoor Enthusiasts
Nothing makes a cozy afternoon inside sweeter than a productive morning in the outdoors. Fall is arguably the best time of the year to get outside and enjoy the fresh air without having to worry about bringing things like sunscreen or coating your skin with bug spray every half hour. Hiking and mountain biking, as well as fall sports like football and soccer are perfect for the cool weather of the fall season. Athletic endeavors like jogging and cycling, recreational sports like fishing or rock climbing can be more enjoyable in autumn. Fall is also the biggest hunting season of the year, with specific start dates in appropriate areas for big game as well as waterfowl, pheasants, quail, turkeys and more. There’s a big difference between keeping warm with the right fall apparel and skimping on layers during the summer, and the temperamental weather of spring can be hard to enjoy with rainfall and humidity. Get out and enjoy the crisp fall weather before winter starts.
